There are many scheduled events at state historic sites across the State of Texas many of you may be interested in taking part in. These unique places honor Texas history and inspire an understanding of what it means to be a Texan. Embark on a journey through Texas history by exploring the THC’s 40 Incredible State Historic Sites, where every location tells a unique story of the Lone Star State. From the battlegrounds of the Texas Revolution to the preserved missions and historic homes, these sites offer an immersive experience that brings Texas’s heritage to life. Explore frontier life at Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight Ranch, where you can walk in the footsteps of legendary cattle pioneers, or take in breathtaking panoramic views of South Padre Island and journey through maritime history at Port Isabel Lighthouse. Camp on the grounds at Sabine Pass Battleground or stay overnight at the Slaton Harvey House. There’s something for everyone.

And for those who don’t want to venture far from home, there will be a special event today on January 11 at 11 am at the Varner-Hogg Plantation in West Columbia. From 11 a.m. to noon today you can learn about the different types of herbal teas and remedies used by the enslaved people during the Patton Plantation era. Visitors will learn about Judah Smith, an enslaved woman who was the plantation cook and a medicinal herb expert who used herbs and teas to treat the other enslaved people. The Varner-Hogg Plantation is located at 1702 North 13th Street in West Columbia.
