About the Rosenwald School

In 1996, the museum volunteers became aware that the historic Rosenwald Columbia School (RCS) was still standing and being used as a hay barn. A committee was formed, The Rosenwald Columbia School Project, to begin preservation efforts. The Museum Board of Directors agreed to serve on the committee whose task would be to research the history of Rosenwald Schools, work toward acquisition and develop a master plan designed to save and restore the RCS. The school was saved and became a part of the museum, opening to the public in October 2009.

The Columbia Rosenwald School is the NATION’s only fully-restored Rosenwald School that is displayed as an interpretive center by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
