First Saturday of the month programs at the Rosenwald School in West Columbia continue this Saturday, August 3, 2024, with “Back to School: Then and Now.” The August event is free, and children of all ages are welcome to participate. The Columbia Historical Museum’s “Back to School” program will begin at 10:30 a.m. and end at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The Rosenwald School is located behind the museum at the intersection of Clay and Broad streets in West Columbia.

Event coordinator Misty Congdon, a member of the Columbia Historical Museum Board of Directors, said Saturday’s program will feature “back to school crafts, snacks and drinks, a self-portrait art project and outdoor chalk-the-sidewalk event where we will draw encouraging messages and pictures for back to school.”

Children and teenagers will be returning to school in the Columbia-Brazoria Independent School District on Thursday, August 15, 2024.

“The old toys toy box will be out to learn games from the past,” Congdon said about this Saturday’s program at the historic Rosenwald School, which was originally located in East Columbia and served as a one-room schoolhouse for Black children during the days of racial segregation. “There will also be back to school stories and boxes to look at.”

The Columbia Historical Museum is located at 247 East Brazos Avenue in downtown West Columbia and is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. For more information, contact the museum at (979) 345-6125.
